Week 12: The Olivet Discourse – Signs of the King’s Return (Matthew 24)

Matthew: Jesus, the King of Heaven and Earth

Week 12: The Olivet Discourse – Signs of the King’s Return (Matthew 24)

Introduction:

In Matthew 24, often called the Olivet Discourse, Jesus speaks about the signs of the end times and His second coming. He describes both the destruction of the temple and the future events that will occur before He returns. Jesus encourages His followers to remain vigilant and faithful.

Cultural/Historical Context:

  • Destruction of the temple: In Matthew 24:1-2, Jesus predicts the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem, which occurred in AD 70. This was a shocking statement for the disciples, as the temple was central to Jewish worship.
  • Apocalyptic language: Jesus uses language that reflects common Jewish apocalyptic imagery, which described cosmic disturbances and divine intervention. This style of teaching was meant to encourage believers in times of suffering and to remind them of God’s ultimate victory.

Key Points:

  1. The Signs of the End Times
    • Subpoint 1: Jesus warns about false prophets, wars, famines, and earthquakes, which are the “beginning of the birth pains” (Matthew 24:4-8).
    • Subpoint 2: He speaks of persecution and the rise of lawlessness, encouraging believers to endure and hold fast to their faith (Matthew 24:9-13).
    • Subpoint 3: The gospel of the Kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world before the end comes (Matthew 24:14).
  2. The Abomination of Desolation
    • Subpoint 1: Jesus references the abomination of desolation spoken of by the prophet Daniel (Matthew 24:15-22), which likely refers to the desecration of the temple and a period of intense tribulation.
    • Subpoint 2: Jesus warns His followers to flee when they see this event, highlighting the urgency and danger of the time.
    • Subpoint 3: This section emphasizes the need for discernment and readiness, as the times will be marked by chaos and deception.
  3. The Return of the King
    • Subpoint 1: Jesus describes His return as visible and unmistakable (Matthew 24:27), unlike the secretive or hidden return some may expect. His coming will be clear to all, signaling both the end of the age and His authority over all nations.
    • Subpoint 2: He uses the analogy of the fig tree to encourage His followers to recognize the signs of His coming (Matthew 24:32-33). Just as the fig tree’s leaves indicate the arrival of summer, the events He describes are indicators of impending judgment. This can also be seen as a reference to the judgment of the nation of Israel, as the destruction of the temple and the suffering of Jerusalem in AD 70 would be signs of God’s judgment upon them for rejecting the Messiah.
    • Subpoint 3: Jesus warns that no one knows the day or hour of His return (Matthew 24:36), so His followers must always be prepared and vigilant. This dual message calls for spiritual readiness not only for the final return of Christ but also for the judgment that comes upon nations who reject God’s authority.

Life Applications:

  1. Living with readiness: Jesus calls us to live with an attitude of expectation and readiness, knowing that He could return at any time. This means living faithfully and obediently every day.
  2. Enduring through trials: The signs of the end times remind us that life will have difficulties, but we are called to endure and stay strong in our faith.
  3. Proclaiming the gospel: Before the end comes, the gospel must be preached to all nations. We are called to be part of this mission, spreading the good news of the Kingdom.

Discussion Questions:

  1. What are some ways we can live with a sense of readiness for Jesus’ return?
  2. How can we remain faithful and endure when faced with challenges or persecution for our faith?
  3. What does it mean for us to participate in proclaiming the gospel to all nations?
