Week 34: Paul in Athens
Verses Covered: Acts 17:16-34
Paul’s Reaction to Idolatry
- While waiting for his companions in Athens, Paul was distressed by the city’s many idols. He engaged in discussions with both Jews and Gentiles, sharing the message of Jesus.
Paul’s Sermon at the Areopagus
- Paul was invited to speak at the Areopagus, a gathering of philosophers. He used the Athenians’ altar to an “unknown god” as a way to introduce them to the true God, explaining that God is the Creator of all things and does not live in temples made by human hands.
- Paul emphasized repentance and the resurrection of Jesus, calling the Athenians to turn from idolatry and believe in the one true God.
Mixed Responses to the Gospel
- Some people mocked Paul when he spoke of the resurrection, but others believed, including a man named Dionysius and a woman named Damaris.
Life Applications:
- Be courageous in addressing the culture around you, even when it’s filled with ideas contrary to God’s truth.
- Use creative approaches to connect with people and share the Gospel in a way that resonates with their context.
- Not everyone will respond positively to the message of Jesus, but don’t be discouraged—some will believe.
Discussion Questions:
- How can we, like Paul, respond to the idolatry or false beliefs we see in the world today?
- What creative methods can we use to share the Gospel in our own culture?
- How should we handle mixed reactions to the Gospel message, like Paul experienced in Athens?
