Week 47: Paul Before Governor Festus

Verses Covered: Acts 25:1–12

Paul’s Case Reopened

  • When Festus succeeded Felix as governor, the Jewish leaders once again brought charges against Paul, seeking to have him transferred to Jerusalem so they could kill him along the way.
  • Festus, wanting to please the Jews, suggested that Paul stand trial in Jerusalem, but Paul refused, knowing the danger. Instead, Paul appealed to Caesar, invoking his right as a Roman citizen to be tried in Rome.

Paul’s Appeal to Caesar

  • Festus agreed to send Paul to Caesar in Rome, setting the stage for Paul’s journey to the heart of the Roman Empire.

Life Applications:

  • Know when to stand firm and use the resources and rights available to you, as Paul did by appealing to Caesar.
  • Sometimes, we must choose a difficult path in order to fulfill God’s plan for our lives.
  • Even when human leaders fail us, God’s plan remains intact.

Discussion Questions:

  1. Why did Paul appeal to Caesar, and what does this teach us about standing firm in our faith?
  2. How can we trust God when the people around us try to hinder His plan for our lives?
  3. What does Paul’s appeal to Caesar show us about using wisdom in difficult situations?
